about

Nora Ephron's Soul for the Sleepless is an outcome of a two-hour stream of consciousness, an exercise in composing that eliminates overthinking. It stands as the inaugural solo piano album in a series.

“I let my thoughts flow freely, guiding my fingers across the keys, resulting in a lengthy piano composition which I named after Nora Ephron, one of my favourite authors, known for notable works like Sleepless in Seattle and When Harry Met Sally.” —Louise McMahon

Using a Roland RD-600, integrated with reverbs, this project is crafted entirely within the confines of a tiny room in the artists home. The artistic endeavour involved composing, performing, and engineering the work.

“I had long desired to create a piano album with this instrument, it is an antique digital piano that holds significance as Roland have discontinued its production. Furthermore, it holds sentimental value as it belonged to my colleague, Pat Fitzpatrick, a member of the Irish band Aslan and a respected session player for various artists. The piano has even toured with Van Morrison.” —Louise McMahon

The resulting music is a very pretty display of piano artistry, evoking a dreamscape and drawing influences from a range of genres such as jazz and neo-classicism. It possesses a minimalist quality, offering a soothing, above the clouds experience. The compositions follow the spontaneous flow of the composer's thoughts, devoid of predetermined structure. “In the end, parts of the composition sounded like a Nora Ephron movie, which reflected my mood that day I guess, nostalgic, urban with a side of cheese” —Louise McMahon

“I recommend listening to this album during moments of solitude, in peaceful surroundings, before sleep, preferably with headphones, allowing yourself to immerse in the romantic subtleties reminiscent of a sleepless night.” —Louise McMahon

“You make a million decisions that mean nothing, and then one day you order take-out and it changes your life.” —Nora Ephron, Sleepless in Seattle, similar to this, the composition happened in a moment.
